STAGE 3 · COMMUNITY PILOT · VERSION 1
Beyond hand dryers: paper towels too.
What we did
Two volunteers approached local restaurants, cafés, gyms, grocery stores, a shopping center, and a community recreation center to introduce the Flick-dry habit. At 9 locations, the owner or manager agreed, and a sticker was installed; at 1, the owner did not want a sticker in their washrooms. We recorded each location in an outreach tracker with its status, contacts, and follow-ups.
What we learned
Our research and the reminder we were offering assumed a hand dryer. In practice, volunteers found that more than half of the locations they visited use paper towels. Guidance that only covers hand dryers cannot reach those washrooms, even though the first step, flicking excess water off into the sink, is the same. This also brought the project full circle—the museum exhibit that started the Initiative was about using less paper.
What changed
- Step-by-step paper-towel instructions alongside the hand-dryer steps.
- A paper-towel video and a paper-towel infographic.
What's next
- Reach out to more organizations online and in person.
- Ask participating organizations and Flick-dry users for feedback on energy or paper savings.
